Episode 84:  Nature in the Heart of Houston—Exploring Memorial Park

Whenever you want to escape the city buzz and immerse yourself in nature, you don’t need to look any further than Houston’s own Memorial Park. This urban oasis is nearly twice the size of New York’s Central Park, boasting about 1,500 acres of open and free green space for the entire family.

In this episode of Spotlight Houston, host Blanca Quezada sits down with Courtney Hall, manager of conservation, and Janelle Bludau, director of Communications and Marketing from the Memorial Park Conservancy. They delve into the park’s rich history, spanning over 100 years, its diverse features, recent improvements, and future plans to enhance visitor experiences. With over 4 million visitors annually, the Conservancy is dedicated to making every visit memorable.

As Earth Day approaches, reminding us of our role in addressing environmental challenges, the Conservancy highlights how they embody this spirit every day through their stewardship of Memorial Park. Courtney discusses the park’s master plan, which focuses on restoring its ecological systems and expanding conservation and recycling practices. She also highlights their innovative BioCycle efforts and initiatives like the park’s bike share program, encouraging visitors to contribute to its conservation.

Janelle introduces a range of dynamic programming at the park designed to foster environmental awareness and cater to diverse interests. From meditation walks and GirlTREK, promoting health and a deeper connection with nature, to educational activities tailored for both adults and children, there’s something for everyone. As summer approaches, the park is also preparing to launch new inclusive programs.
